Thought I’d try making porridge in my rice cooker.
Set it up last night, there were no instructions in my Sanyo manual for porridge so I thought I’d use the risotto setting.
Fine, measured in the oats, 1 cup. Next milk, added it up to the 1 cup line for risotto. Set the timer so it would be ready for 6 am this morning and off to be d I trotted.
This morning, lovely smells coming from the kitchen. Walked in and the keep warm light on the rice cooker was blinking like crazy. Strange I thought, walked over to check out my breakfast and was greeted with a boiled over cooker, milk and oats all over the place. What a mess to clean up at 6am when barely awake.
So what did I do wrong? Answers on a postcard please……….
Will I try again, maybe if I can get the ratio correct. Oh and for the record my rice cooker is a sanyo 5.5 cup fuzzy logic machine.
The porridge that was left in the pot was delish by the way!

Yikes…sorry about the mess! I wish I had some advice to give. Better luck next time?
First time I tried porridge in the rice cooker it was the same, a bit like the old “magic porridge pot” children’s story – the mistake I made was using similar oat/milk ratios as it said on the packet of porridge.
I make porridge in the Cook Japan rice cooker – usually 1 cup of oats:2.5 cups of milk (if you like it runnier go to 3) and cook for about 15-minutes.
I have spoken to another customer who uses their Sanyo all the time for porridge – apparently they also use a 1:2.5 ratio, but also they read the manual as saying you should remove the “inner lid” when cooking porridge. Having looked at the manual this isn’t totally clear, but they said they works perfectly.
Hope this helps
Kind regards

Hmmm, my book doesn’t have any instruction about porridge at all!
I’ll have a go it this later on tonight so I can keep an eye on it, then I’ll maybe try again on the timer if I can get it to go ok. I really don’t have much spare time in the morning which is why I thought that this would be a perfect way to have breakfast ready. I think I just need to fiddle a bit with it!
Thank you for taking the time to offer some advice
