New week, new me?

March 14, 2010

I have reached a decision. I am now at the heaviest I have ever been in my life. Time for a lifestyle change and time to lose the pounds.

Tomorrow kick starts my healthy eating plan. Here’s my lunch for tomorrow……….

2 quail eggs, oyster mushrooms stir fried with shoyu, steamed mixed veggies, kimchi gyozas, steamed rice with red shiso and furikake.

On the side you can also see extra sachets of lo cal juice to keep my fluid intake up and I’m also packing a banana and a clementine.

The tired bento

March 10, 2010

This shows how tired I am tonight, I had to write myself a note to remember my juice in the morning! I forgot to take it today, ooops. Tired bento is also a panda pbj, fruit and a babybel cheese. Right, it’s almost 8pm and I can’t stay awake any longer, off to bed. Night night!

A very large bento for tomorrow.

I have a long day and I need to pack enough food for the day.

So, one ham salad bagel, 4 kimchi gyozas, cherry tomatoes, potato salad, edamame, steamed carrots, baby corn cobs, peperami, orange apple and a banana. The a container of ice tea to wash it all down!

Todays blog post comes via the wonders of modern technology, thanks to the fact I can email from my phone! I’m still slightly amazed at this fact, sad but true. Anyhow back to the bento! Today is a very simple lunch, one of those days you just don’t need any fancy dancy things going on. PB&J Panda pockets to start with, potato salad, cherry tomatoes, mini salami, babybel and a mini jelly cup. Packed in my miffy lunch bag I also have a banana and a mandarin. To stay hydrated today I packed a bottle of ice tea, though I think I need to find a larger bottle! You’ll just have to imagine my bento today though as the camera on my phone isn’t great!

Monday veggie medley (almost!)

March 7, 2010

I’m back on the bento wagon for myself.

Miss Kitty gets her first outing tomorrow, so we’ll see how she fares!

Packed up in my box for tomorrow is mostly a veggie mix. I didn’t plan it that way intentionally but  it’s a healthy start to the week :)

The empty space in my bento is where I’ll pack some fresh rice in the morning before I leave. The other segments contain steamed, stir fried vegetables, shredded smoked ham, potato salad, steamed mange tout, cherry tomatoes and sesame mochi.

To add to my bento I’m packing an orange, a banana and a pack of small cake bars as a little sugar boost for the afternoon. I’ll also pack a bottle of iced tea to keep me hydrated during the day.

Have a nice Monday (>_<)

Bento for small sprog

March 3, 2010

OK, I know I haven’t actually posted any bento photos recently. Small sprog has been making her own bento and I haven’t made any. *gasp*
Actually I haven’t been at work, but that’s another story.

Here’s the bento I made for small sprog tonight……

We’ve got from the top left:
Jam filled Gyozas! with cheese hearts to decorate.
Carrot and cucumber flowers
mini raisn box, cherry tomatoes on a skewer.
Meat bites on bone picks and a strawberry jelly cup.

The jam gyozas are wrapped in cling film as we make our bento up the night before. No way is there time in this house in the morning! The cling wrap will stop them drying out in the fridge overnight.

Another pic of the bento making in progress….

don’t look at the bottom of my sarnies, OK? The bread isn’t squishy enough or I put too much jam in and the bread split!

Carrots were sliced up on my borner v slicer to keep them even. I then stamped out the shapes I wanted from the slices.
The rest are in the fridge for bento on Friday.

People often ask what happens to leftovers when you cut out cute shapes from food for bento?
Well in my case, the carrots above have been put in a zip lock baggie and frozen. I’ll keep filling this baggie up as I make bento, then at some point the carrots will be used in soups, stews and casseroles or even just steamed for a plated dinner. It adds a bit of interest when hubs picks up a carrot with a flower shape cut out!

Here’s what I do to my leftover cheese….

It will get melted into a toastie for my lunch tomorrow. Or it might stay in the box a little longer to be used in hubs lunch on Friday, who knows?

Here’s a bento for small sprog from last week…..

Carrot and cucumber sticks, mini cherry tomatoes, babybel cheese, ham sandwiches, side car of dried fruit.

Oh and some goodies from the Asian foodstore a while back…….

Frozen char siu bun (nomnomnom!)
Kewpie Mayonnaise (nomnomnom!)
Cute sauce dipping bowls to add to my asian dinner set and some daifuku. This is a green tea flavour filled with red bean. If it’s as nice as the plain white was I ate that day, it will be yummy :0)

OK, I think I’m all caught up for now, see you soon!

Squee! It’s here!

February 25, 2010

My lovely new Hello Kitty Box has arrived!!!

She’s a very sturdy box and definitely heavier than any of my regular boxes!

I’ll blog about her later in more detail when I’ve actually used her, but in the meantime here’s a pick of what she looks like…

Oh and the couple of other bits I picked up as well :)

So Cross!

February 15, 2010

When I started my journey into bento, it was very hard for me to find any reasonable containers that sealed well to carry my lunch. During my internet research I discovered a product brand called “fit n fresh” The containers seemed to be a perfect idea for what I wanted to do, so I emailed the company to find out where I could buy in the UK. The answer came back as “sorry we don’t have any outlets in the UK and we have no plans to stock this brand in the UK” *sigh*

So imagine my surprise yesterday while out for coffee with my Mum. I popped into a local discount retailer called TK Maxx and this is what I see……

What??????? I was told that this brand wouldn’t be stocked in the UK, no way!

My Mum had to drag me away so that I didn’t buy the different colour patterns available in the set.  I was very good, I drooled over the set but I did leave it on the shelf.

Mum doesn’t know I’ve another bento set on the way from Japan right now!

It’s this one

When it arrives, I’ll post a review for you with pictures of course :)

Yumminess!

I found a granola bar recipe over on Little Tin Bird, that’s perfect for filling a gap in bento boxes! Very easy to make and quick too! I’ve sampled a piece with my coffee and I have to admit, they are rather tasty. One for the recipe folder I think!
