Bento for small sprog

March 3, 2010

OK, I know I haven’t actually posted any bento photos recently. Small sprog has been making her own bento and I haven’t made any. *gasp*
Actually I haven’t been at work, but that’s another story.

Here’s the bento I made for small sprog tonight……

We’ve got from the top left:
Jam filled Gyozas! with cheese hearts to decorate.
Carrot and cucumber flowers
mini raisn box, cherry tomatoes on a skewer.
Meat bites on bone picks and a strawberry jelly cup.

The jam gyozas are wrapped in cling film as we make our bento up the night before. No way is there time in this house in the morning! The cling wrap will stop them drying out in the fridge overnight.

Another pic of the bento making in progress….

don’t look at the bottom of my sarnies, OK? The bread isn’t squishy enough or I put too much jam in and the bread split!

Carrots were sliced up on my borner v slicer to keep them even. I then stamped out the shapes I wanted from the slices.
The rest are in the fridge for bento on Friday.

People often ask what happens to leftovers when you cut out cute shapes from food for bento?
Well in my case, the carrots above have been put in a zip lock baggie and frozen. I’ll keep filling this baggie up as I make bento, then at some point the carrots will be used in soups, stews and casseroles or even just steamed for a plated dinner. It adds a bit of interest when hubs picks up a carrot with a flower shape cut out!

Here’s what I do to my leftover cheese….

It will get melted into a toastie for my lunch tomorrow. Or it might stay in the box a little longer to be used in hubs lunch on Friday, who knows?

Here’s a bento for small sprog from last week…..

Carrot and cucumber sticks, mini cherry tomatoes, babybel cheese, ham sandwiches, side car of dried fruit.

Oh and some goodies from the Asian foodstore a while back…….

Frozen char siu bun (nomnomnom!)
Kewpie Mayonnaise (nomnomnom!)
Cute sauce dipping bowls to add to my asian dinner set and some daifuku. This is a green tea flavour filled with red bean. If it’s as nice as the plain white was I ate that day, it will be yummy :0)

OK, I think I’m all caught up for now, see you soon!

Kinchaku follow up!

February 28, 2010

After I posted the link for the bento bag tutorial the other day, Angi has gone and made one already!!!!

Check out the results over on Bento Junkie!!

It’s upped the bar for me, now I need to dust off the sewing machine and get going!

Kinchaku (bento bag) tutorial

February 26, 2010

Ok, this post is especially for Angi over at Bento Junkie!

She’d posted the other day about making a bag to carry her bento lunch in and I happened to mention that previously while surfing the web, I’d come across a tutorial which made a kinchaku (bento bag) from a pillowcase.

I promised when I found the link to that tutorial that I’d blog about it here!

So Angi, specially for you, here’s the bento bag tutorial over at OhFransson!

I haven’t yet made this bag as I don’t have any nice old pillowcases and I’m loathe to run out and buy a pillowcase just to try making this bag, so if you do make it, will you come back and let me know how you got on? I’d be really interested to see a finished one :)

I’m still searching………..

February 17, 2010

for the bento box I mentioned way back in this post

I don’t think so!

Can anyone out there involved in making bento help me on this one? I’ve also asked over on the Flickr bento swap group to see if anyone can help.

If you can help and you’d like some goodies from the UK in return for this box, drop me an email or contact me through flickr to arrange a deal, thanks!

A treat?

February 2, 2010

Tomorrow is my birthday. I’d like to treat myself to a nice bento set. Something grown up, with a nice matching bag and chopsticks. It doesn’t have to be a thermal set. Any suggestions guys? Oh and where ever I make my purchase, the supplier has to be able to ship to the UK! Maximum budget I have set aside for this is £40 ($60 or E45)  and I’d really like that to be shipping included!

Suggestions welcome please!

Bah humbug!

December 31, 2009

I thought my waist band was a bit tighter. I weighed myself today and I have gained 6lbs!!!!!!!! OMG!!!!
Diet here we go from Jan 1st or what. I knew there was a reason I hate Christmas, bah humbug!

On the other hand I made a lovely beef stew on the slow cook mode of my rice cooker tonight for tea.

Bung the whole lot in the slow cooker and forget about leave for 6 hours!

Come back just before you need to serve to sort out what you want with it, mash, chips, rice etc. (We had mash!)

Taste for seasoning and then bung it out on plates, easy peasy, really filling and not too taxing on the noodle either at this time of year.

I get the feeling, my rice cooker will be burning hot each day as I cook healthy things for my lunch each day. After my christmas indulgence, I need to shift the pounds!!!

A new use for my rice cooker!

December 11, 2009

Currently the rice cooker is housing some lovely winter mulled wine! Yum yum!

Very easy to do and just gently steaming away on the keep warm function.

1 bottle of red wine

1 bay leaf

2 slices of orange, studded with cloves

sugar to taste

grate of nutmeg

cinnamon stick

Heat together gently until sugar has dissolved. Serve warm and enjoy responsibly!!!

Random act of kindness……

October 16, 2009

Thanks to the generosity of one very very kind person (who incidentally I won’t name here as I haven’t gotten their permission to do so) today I received this in the mail…….
A MUSUBI PRESS AND A GORGEOUS BOX!!!!!!!!!!!

Another pic to show the inside of the box…..
And look what I just happen to have in the cupboard……
Guess what I’m having for lunch next week???? Musubis!!!!

On another note, look what else I found in a local store at a bargain price of £2.50…..
I have the full set of cutters now, I’m very happy today!

Have a great weekend everyone! :0)

Rice Cookers? Help required…..

October 13, 2009

I’m on the hunt for a micom fuzzy logic rice cooker in the UK. One that hopefully won’t break the bank. So far I have found 2 suppliers Yum Asia and Cook Japan

Have any of you used these sites? What do you think? Can you recommend another supplier in the UK (and who will also ship to Northern Ireland, believe it or not many mainland English companies won’t ship to UK or charge extortionate prices for doing so. Hey I still live in the UK!!!)
I’m really frustrated trying to track down a good deal, so I’m asking you my dear friends in blog land for your expertise and help on this one.

Thank you! :0)

NOTE – I have no affiliation with any of the sites mentioned, they were found via Google

New finds for lunch making!

October 3, 2009

OK, I know, I know, I’ve been a slacker for the past few days. I haven’t posted any bentos, I haven’t made any either, ooops!

Sprog has just wanted bog standard sandwiches for her lunch and I have not been making bento for myself, hence the lack of posts over the end of the week.
I have regretted not making bento as I have been gorging on junk and now I feel all icky, lesson learned again I guess!

Well the picture above shows my latest scores for lunch making equipment and it didn’t break the bank either!
The tovolo ice cream sandwich moulds and the biscuit boxes were from Lakeland Limited. They are a great source of kitchen ware and the customer service is second to none. I am happy to pay an extra couple of pounds on items from them as there is a no quibble return policy. (Note, I have no affiliation to Lakeland, I’m just a very happy customer!) When the catalogue arrives, Hubs groans as he says it’s my version of porn! Small sprog is heading the same way and she happily sat the other night poring over the pages with great delight. Maybe it was just to wind her Dad up, or maybe she genuinely was interested, who knows?

As a side note, anyone know where I can find the other tovolo moulds in the farmyard version that won’t break the bank?? Lakeland didn’t have those or I would have gotten them also.

The flask in the picture was a bargain find last night for the princely sum of £2.99! My local Millets store is closing down and the flask was reduced from £6.99. It’s a .35l size and perfect for small sprog for school. I also think it is distinctive enough that it won’t go missing, I’ll name it for her as a precaution though.

Right, I’m off to practice some cookie recipes to test the moulds over the weekend, then I’ll relegate them to sandwich cutters for next week! I’ll report back on the results later.
