OMG! It really works……

October 7, 2009

After watching this video that was posted up on Just Bento last night, I had to give the method of onigiri making a go!
If you haven’t watched the video, off you go and watch it now, you’ll split your sides laughing, honest! (I said to hubs that there’s no way we’d ever get small sprog out that quick in the morning!)

I’m happy to say it really works! I had onigiri made in about 5 seconds flat and to prove it, here they are all packed up in my natural leaf bento…… The other side car contains vegetarian gyozas, which I think possibly might have tofu in them ^-^ (Jenn if you’re reading this, I know I said I didn’t like tofu and I don’t honest, but these are nice!) The main thermal pot will be packed with yummy miso soup in the morning before I leave.

I’m packing 2 thermal bento tomorrow. The weather here has turned really cold and I was freezing all day. So my new Miffy one will be packed for breakfast. The thermal pot separates into two pieces which means it is safe to use in the microwave. I’ve packed my porridge in this pot so I can pop it straight in to cook. The side cars contain chopped fruit for the porridge and apple wedges.
I work outside most of the time so it’s important for me to keep warm, hopefully with a warm breakfast and lunch I’ll achieve that!

I’ll report back tomorrow to let you know how Miffy fared on her virgin outing!
Next all I need is a nice matching Miffy spoon, anyone seen any about?????????? (^-^)

Thursday Tip

So tonight I went grocery shopping, I had some bento stock to replenish after my freezer incident! I picked up some packets of chicken hot dogs and some packets of regular hot dogs. Now for me to store these and use them before they go out of date, I pack them individually. Usually I chop them in half and store 4 halves in a small freezer bag or greaseproof paper. Then I place those packets in a zip lock baggie in the freezer. This means I can just grab a packet of them and cook off enough for sprog and myself without worrying about getting a whole pack used in a week.

This idea works well for things that you wish to freeze for bento lunches but have to buy in larger quantities. I do likewise with items such as the tonkatsu pork, spring rolls, gyoza etc

For tomorrow I have packed the following in m y bento box for lunch:
Top tier: tonkatsu pork, fish shaped egg, cherry tomatoes, crab hot dog shape and soy sauce.
Bottom tier: cherries, dried apricots, almonds, raisins and edamame.
Bottle contains strawberry milk shake and I have a disposable oshibori for a quick clean up after lunch.

I am really trying to up my fruit, veg, nuts and seeds intake, so small portions like this seem to work best for me.

The fish shaped egg didn’t work as planned, I had to trim off the edges to tidy it up. I used a medium egg in this mould but it still appeared to be too big? The medium egg works well in the bunny mould so it may just be a case of trial and error to see what works. I have no idea what size Japanese eggs are in comparison to UK eggs? Maybe that’s why I sometimes struggle to get nice clean moulded shapes!
